Job Description

Title: Custodian

Reports to:  Supt's designee


Definition:


Performs manual labor tasks to clean and sanitize public buildings, offices and institutional residences; performs related work as required.


Qualifications and Competencies:


1.High School diploma or GED.

2.Prior experience in custodial work desired.

3.Applicant should be physically and mentally able to perform all duties.

4.Applicant should have an interest in children and the ability to deal with adults.

5.Have a good prior work record.

6.Applicant must demonstrate ability to read, follow written and oral instructions, read labels etc.

7.Pass a BCI/FBI background check.

8.Ability to perform physical tasks involving bending, squatting and standing of extended periods of time, pushing, reaching and some lifting.

9.Ability to learn to operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment such as a putty knife, squeegee, floor machine, vacuum, wax stripper and polisher, etc.

10.Displays high standards of ethical conduct. Exhibits honesty and integrity. Refrains from theft-related, dishonest or unethical behavior.

11.Works and communicates with internal and external clients and customers to meet their needs in a polite, courteous, and cooperative manner. Committed to quality service.

12.Displays a high level of initiative, effort and commitment towards completing assignments efficiently. Works with minimal supervision. Demonstrates responsible behavior and attention to detail.

Job Goals:


To maintain the assigned area, clean in the best manner possible, repair items when possible and be well organized in order to provide the best possible environment for learning.


Duties:


1.Sweeps, dusts and wet mop floors or stairs; strips, waxes, buffs and reseals floors, using brooms, dust mops, vacuums, wet mops and floor machines.

2.Dusts, cleans and polishes furniture, counters, shelving, window/door ledges and casings, using cloths and cleaning/polishing solutions.

3.Dusts, wet mops and washes walls, ceilings and partitions, using wall brushes, wet mops, cloths and cleaning solutions.

4.Cleans lavatories, toilets and bath facilities, using cleansers and sanitizing solutions, brushes, cloths and squeegees.

5.Disposes of wastepaper and other discards; collects and places trash in an incinerator or trash pick up area.

6.Makes minor repairs to secure table legs; replace handles, knobs, fuses, light bulbs and similar items; tightens screws, replaces nails and performs related tasks.

7.Makes safety checks by observing and checking locked doors, temperature readings for heating and air conditioning, and on/off switches for machines.

8.Sweeps and removes snow from steps and sidewalks immediately adjacent to assigned buildings, using brooms, snow shovels and powered snow removal equipment; occasionally rakes leaves.

9.Shampoos or spot cleans carpets and rugs, using a rug shampooing machine, brush, or cloth and cleaning solutions.

10.Transfers furniture, lamps, accessories and equipment to clear areas for cleaning and redecorating work by lifting and carrying light to heavy objects.

11.As needed summer extra duties.

12.Other duties as needed.
