Position Summary

A School Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting electrical systems and equipment throughout school buildings and facilities. Work is performed to ensure safe, reliable electrical infrastructure so that students, staff, and community can use facilities without interruption or hazard.

Key Responsibilities

• Electrical Maintenance & Repair
• Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electrical systems including lighting, power distribution panels, circuits, outlets, switches, transformers, and control equipment.
• Work Order Completion
• Review and complete assigned work orders using maintenance management software or daily task lists
• Installation Tasks
• Install lighting fixtures, electrical outlets, wiring, conduit, and other equipment according to electrical codes.
• Emergency Response
• Respond to electrical emergencies or outages as needed, including on‑call assignments.
• Safety Compliance
• Follow OSHA standards, National Electrical Code (NEC), and local building regulations to maintain a safe work environment.
• Documentation & Records
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time spent on jobs.
• Coordination & Communication
• Communicate with supervisors, maintenance staff, and sometimes school personnel regarding electrical issues.
• Special Systems Support (varies by district)
• Tasks may include troubleshooting fire alarm systems, low‑voltage systems, and some audio/equipment systems in auditoriums or gymnasiums.

Typical Duties

• Reading and interpreting blueprints, diagrams, and schematics.
• Cutting, threading, bending, and installing conduit and wiring.
• Testing electrical circuitry and detecting hazards or malfunctions.
• Ordering and managing electrical supplies and tools.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent (required).
• Technical training, vocational certification, or electrical apprenticeship experience preferred.

Licenses & Certifications

• Electrician license 

Skills

• Knowledge of electrical systems, tools, codes, and safety procedures.
• Ability to read technical drawings and work independently.
• Effective communication and coordination with facilities staff.

Work Environment

• School campuses — includes indoor and outdoor work.
• Requires physical work, including lifting tools and equipment.
