STUDENT SERVICES DIRECTOR

Reports to: Superintendent

Employment Status: As assigned on board-approved contract

FLSA Status: Exempt


QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master's Degree

2. Valid Ohio special education teacher's license; valid Ohio special education (K-12) supervisory license

3. Minimum of three years teaching experience teaching children with disabilities in one area to be supervised

4. Minimum of two years of administrative experience preferred

5. Must possess a valid Ohio driver's license or have transportation to off-site job related functions

6. Successful completion of BCI/FBI background checks


GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under administrative direction, provides leadership in special education and at-risk programming; continual planning and

evaluation of services for children with disabilities and those at risk for school failure; budget management; unit and grant

application and reporting; employment, supervision and evaluation of staff; and provides support to general education staff


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (The below list is not ranked in order of importance.)

1. Ensures safety of students, taking all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment,

materials and facilities

2. Provides leadership in all areas of special education and at-risk student programs

3. Recommends policies and programs essential to the education of students with disabilities and at risk for school

failure

4. Administers all special education, related service, and at-risk programs funded through the Muskingum Valley

Educational Service Centers

5. Establishes new programs and develop an improved understanding of existing programs

6. Organizes cooperative special education and at-risk programs for special education which provide for program

quality with cost containment

7. Assumes responsibility for own professional growth

8. Monitors enrollment, class size and final authorization for placement, transfer or removal of students from the

cooperative special education units

9. Completes, maintains, and files all special education reports, records and other documents legally required by the

Ohio Department of Education, Division of Special Education or the MVESC administration

10. Coordinates regular five-year curriculum revision and textbook adoptions for all special education courses of study

11. Reports to the Superintendent in a timely manner any developments or problems within the service area schools

that require his/her awareness or action

12. Communicates to the local Superintendents the requirements and needs for children with disabilities and at-risk for

school failure

13. Is responsible for the employment, supervision, and evaluation of staff in special education programs

14. Organizes and chairs regular service meetings with Special Education Coordinators

15. Develops budget recommendations and provides expenditure control including time sheets and monitoring leave

16. Actively participates in community organizations which support services for students with special needs

17. Completes written reports as assigned by the administration in an accurate and timely manner

18. Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance

19. Maintains required license(s)

20. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace

throughout his/her employment at the Center.

21. Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human

beings

22. Helps instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values


OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs all other duties as required or requested by the Superintendent

2. Provides oversight of Diversion Weekend Program, Bus Driver Training and Notification of Homeschooling process


ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Typical office setting; on occasion will be required to load and unload supplies, materials and equipment for off-site

projects.

2. The employee is determined to be at Category 1 regarding exposure to bodily fluids including blood, human tissue,

or bodily fluids and must make "universal precautions" a standard operating procedure.


KNOWLEDGE OF:

Basic knowledge of board policies and procedures; thorough knowledge of individual educational plans, teaching

techniques and strategies, lesson planning, local state and federal laws, rules and regulations regarding special education

and at-risk programming, the concept of least restrictive environment, and special education courses of study.


SKILLS IN:

Written composition and technical writing, record keeping, planning and organization, student performance evaluation,

diagnostic/prescriptive teaching, classroom management, effective communication, and public speaking


ABILITY TO:

Ability to provide consultation and assistance to school personnel, to develop individual educational plans which correlate to

the ETR and IEP; to do demonstration teaching, including the organization of the learning environment; analyze curriculum;

mobilize resources and be familiar with a variety of educational techniques; develop rapport with students, parents, primary

care takers and co-workers; prepare reports; maintain records; and communicate effectively. Ability to assist in the design

of a sequential program leading to independence as an adult with objectives that encompass one or more occupational

skills


EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

Typical school technology as well as assistive technology (e.g., communication devices, etc.)


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Dates of the work period will be stated in the employment contract


PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:

The Student Services Director will be evaluated by the Superintendent or his or her designee in accordance with the

procedures identified by law and including the standards established by the organization. The employee will be given a copy

of the evaluation instrument and standards in advance and he or she will be expected to conduct a self-evaluation and

establish a minimum of one goal annually to advance knowledge, skill and/or ability in a job related area.
