Qualifications, Skills Required, and Language Expertise

● Valid Ohio Department of Education license Associate: Interpreter for the Deaf/Hearing Impaired

● Knowledge of child development and language development, especially as it relates to students who are deaf or hard of hearing

● Proficiency in spoken and written English and one or more of the following visual modes of communication used by students: American Sign Language, Contact Sign Language, Signed English, Manually Coded English, Signing Exact English, Cued Language, Oral Transliteration

● Preferred experience working with students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing

● BCI/FBI Clearance


Overview: The Educational Interpreter provides interpreting and other support services to D/HH students who are receiving education in an inclusive, mainstream, or self-contained setting within the school district. The educational interpreter’s primary function is to provide access to auditory information, facilitate communication among D/HH students, their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school environment. Other duties that may be performed when not required to provide interpreting include reinforcing content, test reading, documenting and participating in meetings with the team members.
