Job Summary
Under general direction, provides daily instruction to assigned students, prepares daily instructional lessons and supervises student participation in curricular, co-curricular, and related activities.
Primary Duties
- Instructs children in skills leading to success in public school programs
- Assists in providing preschool children with the opportunity to participate in regular academic and non-academic education programs and in extracurricular activities.
- Provides intake and initial assessment for children referred to the program; reports assessment and summaries.
- Serves as a liaison between the support personnel identified to work with the preschool students, such as nurse, administrators, as well as parents, physicians, and community agencies
- Provides periodic written and oral progress reports to the parents of preschool children
- Assists families in understanding and accepting their children, helping them in establishing goals and management techniques
- Plans from a curriculum which addresses developmental age and individual exceptionalities; including the cognitive, motor, communication, self-help, adaptive, social emotional, and aesthetic developmental domains; and includes parent involvement
- Provides one or a combination of the following services: direct instruction of children in an integrated setting, provision of itinerant services, assessment and consultation, and parent education
- Uses appropriate methods and materials, modified to meet each student’s individual academic ability level
- Evaluates and reinforces student progress and desirable behavior of each student, using problem solving and curriculum development
- Keeps informed of current professional/subject area literature and curricular learning materials/resources available
- Designs play activities that replicate real-life experiences to help students become aware of the world around them
- Works with students to familiarize them with public school social skills and the rules of group interaction
- Enhances naturally-occurring activities to make them developmental learning experiences for the children
- Supervises the students closely to assure their safety at all times
- Plans for and supervises the activities of the instructional paraprofessional
- Coordinates parent and student home activities that may include education and training, support in coordination with district programs, linkage with other resources, and transition planning
- Facilitates parents’ access to local service agencies
- Updates Director or designee of any critical events relating to students at day school
- Becomes familiar with the scope of local services and agencies available to parents
- Assists in keeping principals and school personnel updated on new referrals and placements from their school areas
- Helps develop parent education groups as a vehicle to parent interaction
- Provides the community, e.g., doctors, schools, libraries, and other agencies serving children three-five years old, with information regarding the young child with special needs and to make known the programs available by the public schools
- Accepts referrals from agencies and acts as a liaison for agencies and the county program
- Reports all activities as required by the DEW, e.g., home visit logs, documentation, etc.
- Maintains a cooperative relationship with fellow instructors, assistants, specialist, and administration in order to facilitate continuity or programming
- Models appropriate social and moral behavior as a public service employee responsible for the education of children
- Serves as an effective team member working with the ESC personnel, schools, and community agencies
- Keeps current on all trainings and yearly contact hours as per preschool licensing
- Undertakes non-instructional school responsibilities to which he/she may be assigned on the same basis as the regular teaching staff
- Keeps informed of current professional/subject area literature and curricular learning materials/resources available
- Participates in workshops given by agencies and personnel such as the SST, universities, county and local staff, and professional organizations designed to upgrade professional skills and knowledge of special education
- Serves on education-related committees
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance
- Promotes a favorable image of the ESC. Encourages community partnerships that enhance ESC programs and services
- Upholds governing board policies and follows administrative procedures
- Reports suspected child abuse and/or neglect to civil authorities as required by law
- Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education
- Ohio Teaching Licensure
- May require successful completion of communicable disease, child abuse, CPR, first aid, CPI and/or behavioral management training or other training as needed
- The employee shall remain free of alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the ESC
- Ability to efficiently multi-task on a daily basis
- Proficiency with use of technology hardware and basic software (i.e., Microsoft office), email, and office equipment (i.e., copier, fax, scanner, telephone, etc.). Proficiency with web-based applications (i.e., Google Docs, DEWs website, social media, etc.), and NCOESC databases
- Ability to preserve confidentiality of student information and records

- Criminal justice fingerprint/background (FBI/BCI), and public health clearances.
